As a preschool teacher, I jumped at the chance to review this book! We read every day so it is nice to have some new material around. Perfectly Maggie wowed not only my preschoolers but also my elementary kids from the start. Fantastically written by Meg Maguire and creatively illustrated by Josie Yee, this book captivated our Rowdy Rascals from beginning to end.
The book flows wonderfully rhyming from page to page making it both easy and fun to read. The illustrations helped the children to visualize and even connect emotionally with the characters in the story. When children start school, they learn very quickly that their classmates are not alike. Perfectly Maggie is a great book to help children through these sensitive times. It allows kids to distinguish their differences from the peers and helps to recognize why it is okay to be unlike their schoolmates. The book goes on to demonstrate examples of relatable situations where Maggie is unlike her siblings. It also illustrates how she questions things that she cannot change about herself, such as her appearance. The book encourages children to embrace themselves for who they are and to be kind to others.
We had a wonderful time reading Perfectly Maggie and playing with the Maggie plush toy that came with the book. There is even a bonus mini book included that the kids delighted in. We loved that we could also see a picture of the real Maggie and to find that her doll looks just like her. Maggie is now a big part of my daily routine as a teacher and the children will never forget her story.

Do you keep a bedtime routine with your children? Does it involve reading books together?

  1. I used to read my kids books at bedtime when they were young. When they got older, sometimes they read to each other. Maggie sounds like a book perfect for these times.

  11. When my kids were young, if we read a book to them and they had a toy to go with that book, their toy joined in. Like the My Little Pony books or Barbies. You are so right that their toy pals help make reading time more pleasurable!
