GOING UP? AN ELEVATOR TO SPACE
Sending stuff into orbit is expensive. Each pound of payload that blasts through Earth’s atmosphere and into space costs about $10,000. But what if you could get supplies up there with no rocket required? That’s the idea behind using a new kind of transportation system: the space elevator.
The idea of pushing an elevator’s “up” button and climbing out of Earth’s atmosphere might seem impossible. But experts say the idea is grounded in strong science. A tether made of extremely strong carbon nanotubes would stretch from Earth’s surface to a space station held in place by Earth’s gravity. The rotation of the Earth would keep the tether taut, allowing cars powered by solar energy to travel up and down its length. The concept may be simple, but actually building an elevator to space is much more complicated. The tether would need to be nearly 60,000 miles (97,000 km) long, and the elevator would require materials that could withstand high-energy cosmic rays, collisions with debris, and other hazards of space. Not to mention that, at around $10 billion (U.S.), it would be one of the most expensive projects ever attempted in human history. But it could be worth the trouble: experts estimate a space elevator would bring down the cost of lifting a payload into orbit to as low as $25 per pound.
In the future, astronauts could use the space elevator to transport not just people into space but
entire spacecraft systems, such as engines, landing gear, and propellant. Spaceships could be
constructed and launched from orbit, making it much easier to reach the moon, Mars, and the
rest of the universe.
