I'm a huge advocate for letting kids read books they enjoy. As a homeschooling parent, I have more control over what books my children are instructed to read for their education. With that, we have books that are required reading for our teen, and then he can choose books he reads for his enjoyment. When I'm handing him a book to read for "school," there's a typical groan followed by tons of sighing. It's a pleasant surprise that he finishes an assigned book and discovers he enjoyed reading it! Below, I've listed some books my son has enjoyed reading.
We own several books by Alan Gratz, but this was the first I purchased for our picky teen reader. Our teen loves everything about history, and Alan Gratz weaves his fictional story through historical events. Refugee by Alan Gratz is another noteworthy mention, but so far, anything by him has been consumed quickly and enjoyed. We bought his books based on recommendations from another teen's parent, and we were not disappointed. It was not quite assigned reading, at least not by me, but my husband wanted our son to read these books so they could talk about them together. He has read The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy, but still needs to finish the series. These are wonderful books to read and compare to the movies, and we heard there are supposed to be more movies coming out soon based on this series. If your teen likes the Narnia series, chances are they will love books by J.R.R. Tolkien as well! While our son has read the whole Lord of the Rings series, The Hobbit is a great place for teens to start. He thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and and then watching the movie with us. We discussed the differences, and he was quick to say, "The book was better!" Garfield! Our son discovered the joy of reading through comics, so this list wouldn't be complete without including his long-time favorite. I remember sitting one evening and hearing loud laughing coming from our son's bedroom, and when I peeked into his doorway to see what had him so tickled, he was reading an old Garfield comic book. Searching for anything he would enjoy reading, I immediately ordered several more Garfield books. He read them all in a day and rereads them often. He has packed them to talk on family vacations to read while we're in the car. Honorable mention. This book is for younger readers, but our son enjoyed reading it, along with a few other books by author Katherine Applegate. Her books stand out to me because my picky and resistant reader would read them excitedly. He didn't enjoy her Animorph series, but The One and Only Ivan and the rest of that series were special when he was younger. I recommend them!
