Meritropolis by Joel Ohman is a YA dystopian, post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that will keep you on the edge. If you are a fan of "The Hunger Games" series, the "Divergent" series, or "The Maze Runner" books, then you will love "Meritropolis!"Joel Ohman is a spectacular writer, and I don't just say that because I am fond of this genre, which I am, but because he knows how to tell a great story as well as write in such a way that you are left in awe and definitely wanting much, much more!
Meritropolis is the city where the action takes place. It was established post event, when all that was believed to survive was a small portion of civilization, that is the part that remained more human than animal! In this city however, there are only a certain number of people allowed to live within the confines of it's walls. If you do not meet the cut no matter your gender or age, then you are sent outside the gates of the city to live or die at the hands of a multitude of animal combinations meant to seek and destroy human beings.
What would you do if you had to face a Bion?
Bull+Lion=Bion
Or if you came across a flying snake, what would you do then, how would you react?
Post event left all creatures in disarray. Whatever animals were dangerous before, are even more so now. The bad thing about it is, humans did it, They designed these animals to kill!
I loved this book so much, I read it in less than a day! (Which I am sure you will do as well)
I wanted to know what would happen to Charley, our main character Sven, his best friend, as well as all the other people on the side of the good.
If you think "Divergent" was crazy with it's aptitude testing, then you will think the same of the merit testing each and every member of Meritropolis has to g through on a weekly basis. If you fall below a certain number you are most likely going to be zeroed out, which means exiled and sent outside the gate to die. However, if you have a high enough number, then you will most likely be sent lie cattle for breeding!
I could continue to talk about this wonderful book, but then you wouldn't have a reason to read for yourself. I do want to give praise to Joel Ohman for his exceptional thought process which brought "Meritropolis" alive for me. As I said before, I wanted more!
If you enjoy the dystopian genre, then you must read "Meritropolis" for yourself. I promise you will be left speechless and overwhelmed with what happens next. Mr. Ohman had me in suspense the entire time through sacrifice, heroism, and a general rebellion that makes this book such a great one.
Me-Other than an author, who are you Joel Olman?
Joel Ohman-My name is Joel Ohman, I am 32 years old, married to my best friend,
Angela, and we have 3 kids, ages 5, almost 3, and 4 months. My writing companion is my 130 lb Bull Mastiff, Caesar (who's asleep on the job most of the time, to be honest).
Me-What books and authors, past or present, have inspired you to write?
Joel Ohman-I read a LOT so there are many different things that have shaped my
writing over the years, but I wouldn't say there was any particular book, or books, that I was consciously looking to for inspiration
while writing Meritropolis.
Me-If anything, what are you currently reading, or what was the last thing you read other than your work?
Joel Ohman-I am constantly in the middle of about 15-20 different books. I read for an hour or two every day.
Me-Do you listen to music while you write, and if so what kinds of music and which artists do you enjoy.
Joel Ohman-I almost always listen to music while I write. Usually its a playlist of the same song or group of songs over and over again because it
allows me to kind of zone in on what I am doing.
Me-In “Meritropolis,“ how were the animal combinations decided upon? For example, I know you chose to write about a bion (bull-lion), as well as many other freaks of nature, but how did you decide which animals to meld together? And why?
Joel Ohman-I have a big list of animal combinations that I came up with before I
began writing the book, and I tried to work in as many as I could. Sometimes the only criteria was that I liked the way the name sounded. Look for many more in the following books!
Me-Who illustrated the animal combinations that are featured before each chapter?
Joel Ohman-Rachel Crafton is a friend of mine who is a very talented artist. She did each of the chapter illustrations.
Me-What or who was your inspiration to write about post-apocalyptic, dystopian, scifi?
Joel Ohman-I've read a lot in this genre so I would say its a mix of a lot of different things.
Me-What projects are you currently working on? Include things other than literary as well.
Joel Ohman-The next writing project is book #2 for Meritropolis. Other than that, I own a number of different businesses, so we always have new and interesting projects in various stages of development. One fun project is our workout website/iOS App/Android App: WeightTraining.com.
Me-Can we expect to read more about Charley, Sven, Grigor, and the rest of your wonderful characters?!?!?
Joel Ohman-Yes!
Me-Are your characters named or formulated personality wise from anyone in real life, or are they purely works of fiction?
Joel Ohman-Purely works of fiction.
