What is your favorite animal? Growing up in a landlocked state I was always daydreaming about dolphins. On family vacations, I had the opportunity to encounter dolphins at the beach and on a few dolphin-watching boat tours. I'll never forget the first time I got to touch a dolphin swimming along and feel its slick back as it swam briskly by. When I learned about the family movie Dolphin Island I jumped at the chance to watch it because...dolphins! What I discovered though was the dolphin "Mitzy" has just a small part of the bigger story this movie had to tell.
My thoughts
I loved the scenes of young Annabelle swimming with Mitzy, a dolphin that was free to swim around the island. It was like seeing my childhood dream on screen. The movie depicts a loving bond between a grandfather and granddaughter. There are strong ties to the community and a diverse cast of characters that play key roles in Annabelle's life.
This movie is Dove-approved for all ages and was the winner of Best Feature Film - Christian Film Festival 2021. While I love that this movie is considered faith-based I feel I should mention a couple of scenes that were worth talking more about with my kids. There is a scene where a child steals a wallet and then pretends to be a good samaritan for a reward. While the character gives back the reward money in the scene, I felt this was a good talking point with my kids. There is also a bigger scene where Annabelle is put in danger by running away from adults on a stolen boat, this is also a good teaching topic. There are bigger themes of custody battles and social services that my kids didn't fully understand, but I found it to be a great way to talk with them about unlimited love. Every child has enough room to love all their family and we don't have to make them choose. Seeing the beautiful clear water and watching the dolphin's antics were great fun. I appreciated the message that awkward first impressions can lead to faulty assumptions and we need to take a look at all sides to have a better perspective. Finding happiness and love after loss is the main theme and even the "bad guy" lawyer has his own role to play to make things right in the end. It was a fun movie with vibrant colors and an overall happy message of adults wanting to do the right thing even if it takes them a while to decide it. Watch the trailer for Dolphin Island below!
